The Ladies Library Association was Incorporated in 1879.
In February 1882 the Farwell Land Company gave property to "The Ladies Library Association" to establish and build a local library. The community donated labor, material, and books. The present building was completed in January 1883.
On January 1, 1888 the Library was dedicated and declared free from debt.
Besides a library, the building was used for area church suppers, the Rebekah Lodge. Later, the Farwell Women's club held meetings in the building. For a few years the Methodist and Congregational Ladies Aids held 10 cent dinners here. During the World War the activities included Red Cross work. In 1931 the Township rented the building for a public Library until the present one was built. During this period the Library suffered a fire and was badly damaged, and the public responded again with labor and donations.
Surrey Township rented the building for their Library. In 1931 until they moved into a new building in 1975. After the new Library was built the Ladies Library Association turned the building over to the Historical Society. In 1977, "The Ladies Library Association" became "The Farwell Area Historical Museum Association" There has always been two goals for these organizations: One, to serve the community and a second to maintain the integrity of the building. In 1999 a project was undertaken to expand and renovate the building, and the Farwell Museum was refurbished with the community support.
In 2003 the Museum became the home of the Farwell Area Chamber of Commerce. This is a benefit for both the Museum and the Chamber. The Chamber has a home, and the Farwell Museum is open more. This is a great way to use and show off one of the few remaining old structures in Farwell. Either group may be contacted by calling: (989) 588-0580.
